Now that school is just around the corner, I wanted to check with you to see who is still interested in keeping the Association for Bilingual Children running this year. I also want to let you know of two other initiatives to start either a bilingual, alternative school or a montessori. (See below)

The objective of the Association (ABC) is to provide support to parents who are raising their kids--or would like to--in a bi- or multi-lingual environment, to share resources (books, games, etc.) and to provide structured play and learning opportunities to the kids where they can be immersed in the minority language. For this purpose, we have a collection of books and games that are available for borrowing, or you can bring your own to add to the collection (on loan or given). We also organize "activity days" where one or more parents agrees to host an activity for the kids. We have had the support of the MJC in the past to give us two rooms in their building in Chamonix--one for arts and crafts, and the other for running and tumbling. Typically these activities have been in English, but other languages are encouraged and welcomed, according to interest and availability of native speakers. This year we have a commitment from a French mother to do activities in French (in exchange for the activities in English for her children).

If we keep the association running, we need to:
- renew membership fees
- renew our insurance (by January 1st, 2010)
- renew our partnership with the MJC and request rooms/days
- OR look for other partnerships with the Mairie or private entities (i.e., INSTEAD, hotels) to get space that might be available also during holiday periods
- meet to elect officers to the association (president, VP, secretary, treasurer)
- plan the calendar
- make and distribute new flyers.

Most of all, we just need to be sure that there is commitment from everyone to share the responsibility of hosting activities, as well as participating in them.

If there is not enough interest/availability, then we just need to decide what to do with the remaining budget (about 50 euros, i think) and all the art supplies and books. I propose donating them to one of the projects mentioned below, or we organize a party where we can spend the money on lots of junk food and toys for the kids!

So please respond to me directly with your thoughts, particularly:
- if you would like to keep it running, what type of activities are you interested in (ages, languages, days, times)
- would you be available to help organize activities or help out in other ways (flyers, publicity, website updates, writing letters in French, etc.)
- if you no longer need the services of the association, what do you propose we do with the remaining assets.

Welcome to the webpage of the Association for Bilingual Children. (en francais ci-dessous). The purpose of the association is to bring people in contact with resources (including people, educational materials, and events) that will help them raise their children bilingual (or become bilingual themselves!). This website was created as a way to keep a calendar of events, and a forum for discussion that can be updated by all participants in the association (see "About this website"). In how many different languages can YOU say: “I can't believe 2007 went by so fast!!” Many of us have children that will be starting or going back to school in the French school system, and will no doubt be speaking French better than their non-native parent(s) in no time. We all know this is a wonderful advantage for them, but what to do to make sure immersion in the French community does not cause them to lose their second languages? The answer is to find opportunities for them to speak these languages with other children and adults in authentic, fun and educational settings. That is what the Association for Bilingual Children is here for! Although we did not have much activity over the summer, we will try to be more active starting in September, but our efforts also depend on your interest and participation. So become a member of the Association, and help us organize meaningful and fun events in many different languages. Also, tell your child's new classmates and teachers about ABC. We are also here to support the French community in acquiring second languages for their kids, even if both parents are French speakers.

Bonjour, et bienvenu au site Internet de l’Association Bilingue de Chamonix. Le but de l’association est de mettre des gens en contact avec des ressources (par exemple, des personnes, des matériels pédagogiques, des évènements) qui peuvent leur aider à élever leurs enfants bilingues.

Ce site a été créé pour avoir un calendrier et un forum de discussion qui peuvent être modifié et mise à jour par tout membre de l’association (voir la page "About this website"). Commencez par le calendrier d’évènements, et puis visitez le forum de discussion et racontez vos expériences.

Dans combien de langues différentes peux TU dire : "Je n'arrive pas à croire que c'est déja 2008!!" Bon nombre d'entre nous vont amener nos enfants à l'école dans le système scolaire français (de nouveau ou pour la premiere fois). Comment ferez vous pour vous assurer que l'immersion dans la communauté française ne les fera pas perdre leurs deuxièmes langues ? La réponse est de trouver des occasions pour qu'elles parlent ces langues avec d'autres enfants et adultes dans des situations authentiques, amusant et éducatifs. C'est pour cela que L'Association Bilingue de Chamonix a été crée! Bien que nous n'ayons pas eu beaucoup d'activité au cours de l'été, nous essayerons d'être plus actif à partir de septembre. Cependant, nos efforts dépendent également de votre intérêt et participation. Devenez ainsi un membre de l'association, et nous aider à organiser des événements amusants et educatifs dans beaucoup de différentes langues. En plus parlez aux nouveaux camarades de classe et aux professeurs de vos enfants au sujet du ABC. Here is some information about the budget of the Association. We are a non-profit association, and want to assure you that your membership fees are being used only to keep the association running.

subscribe to bilingual family newsletters and journals, to add to our library
expand the resources in the bilingual library to include other languages (i.e., Spanish, Swedish, Italian) and formats, i.e., toys, videos, etc.
Organize a special event, i.e., a conference/debat that would bring in guest experts on bilingualism and bilingual education to help provide advice about raising and schooling kids in multiple languages.

You can become a member of the association by filling out the membership form at the bottom of the page.

Benefits of membership: Being a member allows you to:

organize an event and use the rooms in the MJC
borrow books and toys from the multilingual library
add your name and services to our bilingual resources list or consult the list to find language instructors, guides and other services in languages other than French

There are also many other things you can do to help:

translate any text in this website. Just use the "easy edit" buttons found on any page.
donate toys (in French or other languages) and children's books (in languages other than French) to our library
organize an activity day
be a representative of the association in your school. Caroline N. is the representative for Les Bossons, and Sharon F. is the representative for Centre, Heather D. is a representative for Servoz/Passy. We are looking for reps. for Les Houches, Les Pelerins, et Jeanne d'Arc. The purpose would be to act as a point of contact to distribute flyers about events, and to discuss with school staff how the association can help.
Help copy and distribute flyers. Scroll to the bottom of the page to download a flyer that you can print out. We are also looking for people that can design better flyers, in different sizes and for different purposes. If you have skills as a designer, please contact us.
volunteer to manage a subcommittee for a specific group. For example, we would like a to organize events targeted at specific age groups, family types and languages. If you would like to be the focal point for these subcommittees, let us know.
donate supplies for our activites. Particularly: an electric teapot, so that we can serve tea at meetings; a portable stereo that can play CDs; arts and crafts supplies, including scratch paper for drawing and painting.

An "Activity Day" is one of the ways we want to encourage our children to have meaningful interaction with other children and adults in the 'minority' language (i.e., languages other than French, which is already easy for our children to learn because they live and go to school in a French community).

An Activity Day consists of one or more 'centers' where an adult will facilitate an activity of his or her choice: art, music, sports, games, etc. in his or her native language. The day might consist of centers of the same language, or different languages. Then centers will be tailored to the age of the children that come, although a recommended age will be listed on the website information page.

THE NUMBER AND TYPE OF CENTERS IS DEPENDENT UPON THE INDIVIDUALS WILLING TO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME TO FACILITATE THE CENTER. When you arrive, you might be asked to lead a group, or at least monitor a small group of kids. Parents can take turns, and still have plenty of time to socialize, but you are also requested to help out! If you know in advance you will be coming, and want to help out, contact the organizer to find out what you can bring. Or simply show up with an idea, and supplies needed, and we will set up a center for you!

PARENTS MUST REMAIN WITH THEIR CHILDREN.

If you are interested in facilitating a center for this activity day or a future day, please contact the association to sign up.

A small fee may be charged for non-members. This fee helps us keep the association running.

Qu'est ce que c'est qu'une "Journee d'Activites"?

C'est une des manieres que nous voulons encourager nos enfants à interagir de façon signicative avec d'autres enfants et adultes dans la langue 'minoritaire' (c.-à-d., des langues autres que le Français, qui est déjà facile pour nos enfants à apprendre que parce qu'ils vivent et vont à l'école dans une communauté française).

Une journée d'activité se compose d'un ou plusieurs 'ateliers' où un adulte facilitera une activité de son choix : art, musique, sports, jeux, etc. en sa langue maternelle. Le jour pourrait se composer des centres de la même langue, ou de différentes langues. Des centres seront conçus en fonction de l'âge des enfants qui viennent, bien qu'un âge recommandé soit noté à la page de l'information du site Web.

LE NOMBRE ET LE TYPE D'ATELIERS DÉPEND DES INDIVIDUS VOULANT OFFRIR LEUR TEMPS POUR CE BUT. Quand vous arrivez, on vous demandera peut-être de surveiller une group d'enfants, ou de participer d'une manière ou une autre. Les parents peuvent changer à tour de role afin d'avoir aussi du temps pour discuter entre eux. Si vous savez en avance que vous voulez venir, contacter la personne qui organize la journée, et on vous dira ce que vous pouvez amener. The library is a collection of books, toys and other multimedia that have been donated or lent by association members. Books can be borrowed or read on site during the library open hours (1st Tuesday of every month, 16h30 - 19h). Members of the association may borrow books freely on these days, or during any activity day. Non members may borrow a book or toy in exchange for another one, browse the collection, and read books in the premises during the library open hours. (See "How to become a member").

Scroll down to the "Attachments" section below, to locate a copy of the current list of books available, as well as a reminder of who has books that have been checked out.

Note: the books are indicated as level 0, 1, or 2, ROUGHLY according to the ratio of text to images, and therefore the suggested age/reading level. For example, "0" books would be for infants and newborns (large images, contrasting colors, etc.). "1" books are for infants and young toddlers--the are probably hard covers, made to be durable. "2" books are those that have more text, and therefore geared for older audiences and particularly good for readers (native or non-native). Learners of English at any level can benefit from all types of books for learning basic vocabulary and syntax, as well as practice reading and spelling.

Discuss having children in chamonix

Although this doesn't really have anything to do with bilingualism, since we are a group of parents with small children, it is often challenging to find things for them to do when most activities (skiing, clubs, etc.) are geared towards children at least 4 years old, and of course, adventurous adults!

In this discussion area, you can add your comments about what the most fun things are to do in Chamonix with small kids. I've gotten the discussion started with a few of my favorites, but please add more.

Discuss Bilingualism

This is an open discussion area for experienes and questions related to raising bilingual children.

When posting, describe your situation:

OPOL = "One parent, One language". For example, father is French, and only speaks French to the children; mother is English, and only speaks English to the children. Parents speak either majority language (ML, see below)--French, or minority language (mL)--English--to each other.

mL@H = "Minority Language at Home". For example, you live in France, but both parents speak English in the home, to each other and to the children (regardless of whether or not English it is their native language)

ML@H = "Majority Language at Home". For example, you live in France, but both parents speak French to each other and to the children. The second language exposure comes from school, a babysitter, educational resources, etc.

This site is a WIKI. That means that anyone can add to or edit the content by clicking on the "Easy Edit" button, or by using the 'Page Toolbox' to the right.

Examples of some things you can do:

"WETPAINT" is a free wiki host, meaning that the website doesn't cost the association anything, and 'Wetpaint' does all the development. As you guessed, there's no such thing as 'free', so in exchange you do see advertisements all over the bottom of every page.

Meeting minutes / Comptes Rendus

Meeting: November 21, 2007 (en français ci-dessous)

Several decisions were taken by participants at the second meeting of the Assemblée Générale held in Chamonix, on Wednesday, November 21, to discuss the objectives, activities, and functioning of the association. There were members and non-members present, and several people who expressed an interest in contributing but couldn't make it on time. I will try to get a full 'compte rendu' of the meeting can be found at the bottom of this page, but the following is a summary of the important points.

1. Who are we trying to reach with an association for "bilingual" children? It was brought to our attention that some people felt that ABC was not applicable to them because they are not 'bilingual'. For our purposes, bilingual also means bicultural and binational and is applicable to anyone who is interested in interacting with people in languages other than their native toungue. So this means foreigners living in France, and learning French; mixed families (one francophone parent and one foreign parent) as well as completely francophonefamilies who might want to learn a second language. It also meanspeople who work with families... i.e., schools and day cares... whomight want to know how to better serve bilingual families or help themintegrate. The focus is on children of all ages, though it is true that we have a special focus on the under 6-year old crowd because there are so few activities for this age group in the area and that is when language development is so important. Also, as mentioned above, with the limited amount of resources (human and financial) that we have right now, we can't do everything that we would like, but it would be great to designate volunteers to help develop activities for different types age groups/languages/family types. Again, we have a great opportunity to use the facilities at the MJC, we just need more people who can give their time to do so.

2. The MJC is a good opportunity for us, but if we want to keep organizing activities we need to haveinsurance, so we will have to begin fundraising activities soon. Thismeans, first of all, having people become members of the associationfor an annal fee, which we set for the time being at 15 euros per year. We can try to keep this amount low by holding fundraising events and applying for grants with the city and other organizations. Réunion du 21 novembre 2007

Certaines décisions ont étéprises par des participants lors de la deuxième réunion de l'Assemblée Générale tenu à Chamonix, mercredi le 21 novembre pour discuter les objectifs, les activités, et le fonctionnement de l'association. Il y avait des membres et des non membres présents. Un compte rendu complet est disponible en bas de cette page, mais voici un resumé de certains points importants :

1. Qui est-ce que nous essayons d'atteindre avec une association pour les enfants "bilingues". Elle a été portée à notre connaissance qu'il y a des personnes qui pense que le ABC n'est pas pour eux parce qu'elles ne sont pas 'bilingues '. Pour nous, etre bilingue signifiesi d'être biculturel et binational et est donc applicable à n'importe qui qui est intéressé à interagir avec d'autres personnes dans des langues autres que leur langue maternelle. Ainsi ceci signifie les étrangers habitant en France, et apprenant le Français ;les familles mélangées (un parent francophone et un parent étranger)aussi bien que les familles complètement francophones qui pourraientvouloir apprendre une deuxième langue. C'est aussi pour des gens qui travaillent avec des familles bilingues (i.e, écoles, crèches) et qui veulent savoir comment mieux leur integrer. Nous ciblons des enfants de tous les âges, bien qu'il soit vrai que nous ciblons un peu plus fort les enfants de moins de 6 ans parce qu'il y a tellement peu d'activités pour cette catégorie d'âge dans le coin. En outre, comme mentionné ci-dessus, avec la quantité limitée de ressources (humaines et financières) que nous avons en ce moment, nous ne pouvons pas faire tout que nous voudrions, mais on aimerait bien avoir des volontairespour aider à développer des activités pour différents groupes d'age/languages/familles.

2. Pour la troisième fois de cet email je dois mentionner notre manque de ressources... cette fois se référant au côté financier des choses.Le MJC est une bonne occasion pour nous, mais il vient avec un prix.En particulier, si nous voulons continuer l'organisation des activités nous devons avoir une assurance responsabilité civil, ainsi nous devrons commencer à rechercher des moyens de financement. Ca commence par trouver des personnes qui veulent bien devenir adhérants de l'association, ce qui coût 15 euros par an. Nous pouvons essayer de maintenir cette quantité basse en tenant des événements de collecte de fonds et en recherchant les fonds de subvention aupres de la mairie et d'autres organismes. The association was created according to the 'Loi 1901' in March 2007. A copy of the statuts is available below.

The founders of the association are:

Sarah Pouezevara, Mother of two (Jeanne, 10/04 and Elizabeth, 6/06) and consultant in international development. She is American, the childrens' father is French, and they are raising the children OPOL (see 'Discuss Bilingualism page')

Sarah Pikul, Mother of one (Philly, 7/06) and animatrice at the Creche des Pelerins. Sarah was raised bilingual, with a French mother and American father. Filly's father is French, and they are raising her OPOL.

Est-ce que l'association est uniquement pour les anglophones?
NON! Nous souhaitons vivement nous connecter avec des familles comme francophone ou autres, non seulement les familles bilingues/binationals ou étrangères en france. Le but est de créer des occasions pour que tous nos enfants entendent et (eventuallement) parlent des langues étrangères avec d'autres enfants et adultes dans des situations authentiques, amusant et éducatifs, et ceci dès les premiers jours.

Is the Association just for the English-speaking community?
NO. The Association is for anyone who would like to expose their children to a second (or third) language. This includes French native speakers who would like their children to grow up bilingual. The goal of the association is to help you find other people, resources and opportunities to use languages other than French.
